About the Sierra Foundation
In 2007, a group of community leaders recognized that student organizations throughout the Sierra Unified School District needed additional support. Many of these groups needed help coordinating fundraising and accounting services, while others required direct financial assistance to keep valuable programs available to students. Those leaders responded by creating an organization dedicated to bringing the community together in support of local education.
The Sierra Foundation was established in 2007 as a California nonprofit public benefit corporation and received federal tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) organization in February 2008. Its mission is to support educational opportunities for students in the Sierra Unified School District and its feeder communities by strengthening fundraising efforts and providing resources for academic, extracurricular, and student-enrichment programs.
On May 3, 2008, the Foundation held its first fundraising dinner at the historic Old Qualls Ranch. The event raised approximately $13,000, which was used to support a broad cross-section of student programs throughout the district. That first gathering established a tradition of community generosity that continues today.
Since 2013, Polofest has served as the Sierra Foundation’s signature fundraising event. Held at the San Joaquin Polo Club, Polofest offers guests the rare opportunity to experience the excitement and tradition of a live polo match while enjoying food, refreshments, auctions, and an unforgettable afternoon in support of local students. The event brings together generous sponsors, donors, educators, and community members whose support helps the Foundation expand educational opportunities throughout Sierra Unified.
In 2025, the Foundation introduced the Tollhouse Derby, a lively, family-friendly celebration created especially for our mountain and foothill communities. Inspired by the pageantry and excitement of the Kentucky Derby, the event features horse racing, creative contests, children’s activities, live and silent auctions, food, entertainment, and plenty of opportunities for neighbors to gather and have fun. More than a fundraiser, the Tollhouse Derby is a true community celebration—bringing families, schools, local businesses, volunteers, and supporters together around a shared commitment to our students.
Funds raised through these events and other community partnerships help provide scholarships, classroom grants, student programs, educational opportunities, and other resources that might not otherwise be available. Through the commitment of its volunteers, sponsors, donors, educators, and community partners, the Sierra Foundation continues helping local students “reach new heights in educational excellence.”
